welcome to lesson 8: gender and social inclusion

Protecting forests plays a vital role in mitigating climate change. Let’s delve into the significance of forests, the REDD+ framework, and how it contributes to global efforts.
This lesson will help us understand the importance of Gender and Social inclusion in REDD+ conservatism implementation.

LESSON OBJECTIVES
-
Understand the basics of gender and social inclusion in REDD+ implementation.
-
Discuss the GESI approach in REDD+ project implementation.
- Understand the importance of gender and social inclusion in REDD+ projects implementation.

JUMA CASE STUDY
Juma, a college graduate, turned towards farming after years of joblessness. He convinced his parents to let him use their land for commercial farming. It wasn’t easy. With limited capital, he took a loan to purchase farming inputs as well as tree seedlings. Juma still had to contend with the uncertainties associated to farming: seasonal price fluctuations, pests and parasites, irregular rainfall and expensive farming inputs. Juma is totally clueless about carbon sequestration, conservatism, and activism. How can this REDD+ module help him navigate the unprecedented challenges he faces while at the same time, opening his eyes to opportunities it provides?

FATUMA CASE STUDY
Fatuma’s family’s livelihood depends entirely on the soil. Raised in a family of 10 depending entirely on the soil and forest for their livelihood, she learned the importance of preserving the environment . She watched her parents plant trees, grow crops for consumption with the surplus sold at the local markets. Fatuma is actively engaged in forest preservation, tree planting and she volunteers with local organizations to sensitize communities. However, she is often disrespected and belittled on the basis of her gender. How can REDD+ empower her to communicate effectively and sensitize the communities on gender discrimination and foster inclusion?

LESSON 8 QUESTIONS
-
Can you think of a marginalized group in your community?
-
In your opinion, does Juma experience gender stereotyping as much as Fatuma does?
- How can we level out the gender inequality in REDD+ implementation?
